about

We believe that music, in many different ways, can help foster a mental space for meditation. This track is intended to accompany a 10-minute self-directed meditation and help listeners explore meditative states and as they experience the shifts and transitions unique to each meditation.

We wanted to make a track that would flow with the practitioner, a track that would put the inward journey center stage, above the interest of what the music was doing. We wanted to make music that wouldn't pull anyone away from themselves. With this piece, we aim to transition the listener away from their default zones and into a mental space for meditation.

We chose to have no set pulse so the rhythm of the heart and breath would stay central, and no lyrics, to keep the stories that are spoken away. To encourage the meditative state to be uninterrupted, we chose to keep the shape of the track steady, with no dramatic shifts. Instead, we created a cornucopia of subtly changing sounds and timbres to wash over the ears and mind, a track that would take the listener somewhere else the way a gentle shift in the wind can on a fall afternoon.

“Lap-steel whiz Myk Freedman excels at intensely evocative instrumentals that draw on Dixieland, klezmer and avant-garde jazz. His aesthetic is wistful yet subtly surreal.”
